The system you decide upon should be based on how you've learned most efficiently in the past.

You also have to learn the basic characters used in Japanese. You do not have to learn proper spelling, but at least learn what symbols correlate to what sounds. This will give you a basic ability communicate, as you can always write down something that is close to what you are trying to say. You will find this helpful when traveling or when speaking to anyone in Japanese before you are really comfortable with the language. By doing this, you will be learning how to read in the new language as well as being able to communicate by writing things down phonetically.

Flash Cards are a good idea. For studying Japanese you should actually get several types of flash cards. You should have a set that is for memorizing vocabulary and grammar rules. Since you have to learn Japanese characters and how to read them, you should also have flash cards for this purpose. To work with the flash cards, use on side for the Japanese and the other for the phonetic pronunciation. Be sure to not mix up the different sets of cards or you'll only get confused and not know what you're looking at!

If you want to learn a language, you should try anything that might possibly help. The key to making the process a smooth one is to figure out which learning tips and tricks work best for you. Just remember: you can learn Japanese. You just need to be patient and eventually you'll be reading, writing and speaking like a native!
