Anime is a well known type of Japanese animation that is now easy to find. It's now easy to find Anime almost anywhere in the West, whether dubbed in English or in the original Japanese version with subtitles in English. If you want to find Anime, you can either visit the nearest video rental store or do a web search and you'll find a wide selection. Be sure to choose the option that plays it in Japanese and follow the subtitles. By simply watching and listening, you will develop a vocabulary and discover how phrases are used. This way of learning Japanese is more like entertainment than study, but it works! If you watch Anime you will start to develop your own preferences; some good ones to look for are Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop or TriGun.

It's also important to learn how to write and understand the Japanese alphabet. It's more important to become familiar with the characters and how they sound than to be concerned with proper spelling at this stage. If you have difficulties, you can then write down something that is at least an approximation of what you are trying to say to someone. This system can be a good tool if you go to Japan before you've really mastered the language. If you can write down words even phonetically, you'll find that you can communicate when you have to; you'll also be learning how to read in the new language.

You will also learn faster if you work with flash cards. For studying Japanese you should actually get several types of flash cards. One flash card set can help you remember vocabulary and basic grammar. Then you can get a set that teaches you the characters and how to start reading in Japanese. The best method to use is to write the Japanese on one side of the card and the phonetic equivalent in your own alphabet on the reverse. Try to keep the sets from mixing, especially in the beginning, or you could end up confused and frustrated!
